Doors pocket on either side to dissolve the boundary between inside and out and allow the living space to extend under the cover of the broad overhang.

We wanted to create a stair at #MadroneRidge that We wanted to create a stair at #MadroneRidge that is not only a circulation element, but a space to pause and take in the incredible surroundings. Gray limestone from below interlinks with Oak blocks from above to form the stair. A broad window seat offers a quiet place to pause and take in the forest.

Thank you to the @aiacalif for presenting #MadroneRidge with the Residential Design Honor Award and a fantastic awards celebration at @calpolycaed.

Comments from the jury:
This project’s pavilion organization is clearly expressed and detailed, and it is coupled with strong performance. | Skillfully done. | They used pre-fab components and reused materials, which doesn’t happen a lot in single-family residential. | The jury appreciated the resiliency consideration in material and system selection.

From a recent feature in @dwellmagazine, written by Brian Libby @bjlpdx:

"Forming the spine of the glass-wrapped home is a long wall clad with rammed-earth panels, fabricated with sand harvested from the building site. 'We were looking for a way to bring the tactility and the sensory quality of the beach into the house so that we didn’t feel like we were keeping the beach out, but rather threading it throughout,' explains architect Jess Field, co-founder of Palo Alto, California, firm Field Architecture with his father, Stan. 'Everything else cues off of that.' "

Sunlight moves across the #rammedearthwall at #Whi Sunlight moves across the #rammedearthwall at #WhiteSands. Carefully placed skylights leverage the wall’s thermal mass to collect heat during the day. As temperatures drop throughout the cool oceanfront nights, the wall radiates heat back to space - essentially turning the wall into a central passive heating element. The constantly changing light across the wall highlights not only its function, but also its materiality: white sand from the site compacted to form the wall creates a tonal link to the stone skirt that wraps up the wall along the building's main circulation route.

From a recent feature in @dwellmagazine, written by Brian Libby @bjlpdx:

"Inside, the rammed-earth wall guides one from the entrance to the public areas that face the ocean. 'We were looking for an organizing device that could separate out and draw a distinction between the private and the shared spaces of the home,' Jess explains. 'That started to inspire us to actually think about a single wall, an element that would thread all the way from the beach side of the house to the street side, and one that could be constructed out of the same material as the dunes themselves.' #WhiteSands is organized around a "spine" wall of #WhiteSands is organized around a "spine" wall of rammed earth made with the quartz-rich sand harvested from the excavation of the house. The beach and the home share the distinct colors and textures that make the place unique and create a powerful sense of connection between the home and the land.

The rammed-earth wall forms a path through the home to an expansive view of the Pacific Ocean. At the living space, the wall opens up to floor-to-ceiling glass, which faces the sea and orients the home toward the restored dunes and breaking waves. Carefully placed apertures frame the sculptural Monterey Cypress trees that border the home and create an immersive experience of the site. The home is rooted in its natural surroundings, creating a sanctuary with constantly changing light, weather, and seasons that brings to life the unique beauty of Carmel Beach.

From a recent feature in @dwellmagazine, written by Brian Libby @bjlpdx:

"When viewed from the beach, however, the home's signature material isn't the panels—it’s glass. Field Architecture used wrap-around glazing to capture panoramic views framed by cypress trees. 'Hanging out in the living area either inside or outside on the patio, you feel that connection to the ocean, and the serenity you get is just wonderful,' says one of the homeowners. 'It’s our favorite part of the house.' "

Oriented towards the angle of the surf, #WhiteSand Oriented towards the angle of the surf, #WhiteSands lets the broad vista of the Pacific become an organizing principle for life inside and outside the home. Glass walls wrap the corner, creating a feeling of openness and connection to the sea. The colors, textures, and feel of the sand, the dunes, and the water are reinforced through every element of the architecture, bringing the feeling of the beach into the house.
