The folded roof forms of #MadroneRidge are shaped The folded roof forms of #MadroneRidge are shaped by diagonal valleys that channel rainfall. Copper spouts at the end of each valley release the water to catchment basins on the ground, which fill and slowly drain. Arranged along a single line that threads from one side of the house to the other, the rain basins become an experiential display that brings attention to the cycle of rain and the welcomed recharge of the aquifer below.

Overlooking a valley in Northern California, #MadroneRidge was inspired by the presence and absence of rainwater on the site. The seasonal rains metaphorically carve a path through the house and capture the poetic experience of falling water. By adapting the human environment to the same natural forces that shape the land, the house collaborates with the natural hydrological systems that nurture the landscape.

Creating a sense of place on the beach in Carmel s Creating a sense of place on the beach in Carmel started with the unique color of the sand. Using sand from the site in the rammed earth, we created a spine wall that traverses through the house and imparts the feeling of the beach threading through the home.

The earth wall provides regulating thermal mass to alternately heat and cool the home. A skylight along the length of the wall washes the wall with sunlight that shifts throughout the day #WhiteSands
