“Part of the challenge in the suburbs is peeling back all the layers to reveal the land’s natural identity,” says Jess Field, the son half of father-son architecture firm @fieldarchitecture. In this Los Altos, California, plot, they had their work cut out for them. Dotted with oaks and redwoods, it had been amended over the years with fences, a swimming pool, and a street-facing house, whose driveway, trash-collection area, and cinder block retaining wall were obstructing a debris-filled stream that had become infested with invasive plant species. Owners Ian and Krista knew they wanted to make a fresh start with the land, but the best place for the home they envisioned was an awkward triangle, in the middle of which grew a magnificent old-growth blue oak. Using that as an anchor, the architects devised a plan to work around it. Their design alludes to a typical hip-roofed ranch house, but one that has been split in two. “It’s as if we carved through the middle and let the two sides wishbone away from each other to settle into the topography,” Jess explains. Nestled between the two structures is a courtyard where the old oak reigns like a living piece of art. The private wing of bedrooms and offices extends deeper into the trees, creating the feeling of camping out in one’s own home—at night a full-throated chorus of frogs lulls Krista and Ian Johnson to sleep, and at dawn, they’re greeted by a symphony of birdsong. For the couple, being immersed in the sights and sounds of nature is a radical corrective to their high-paced jobs in the tech industry. Dawnridge nestles into the sloping ground. On a site that at first seemed unbuildable, we discovered pockets between the stream and the Oaks where the trees cleared just enough. The site is an important part of a larger natural fabric, and the house opens to bring the sights and sounds of the surrounding wildlife into daily life. Excited to see Dawnridge on the pages of the current issue of Dwell! The design started with the restoration of a stream that winds its way along a pocket of Oaks and Redwoods. The house is envisioned as a gable form that is split to wishbone around a majestic Blue Oak. Walls of glass and timber slats provide privacy and filter the natural light. The space between the two gable structures at #sentinelridge creates a pathway that meanders between the buildings and frames views of the landscape on either side.

One of the mandates of this project was to repurpose material that would otherwise have been considered waste or excluded due to defect. A variety of wood species, each piece having its own unique character, creates a beautiful, rich mosaic. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
