The biggest challenges of a site can often inspire The biggest challenges of a site can often inspire its greatest design opportunities. At #PinonRanch a steeply sloping woodland dense with trees would have to host the new residence.

Working our way from bottom to top, we studied the arrangement of trunks and branches along the slope until we found the perfect contour that allowed us to thread the house through the woodland without removing any trees. Using the gaps between each of the volumes of the house, the spaces in between become moments of pause that host outdoor living spaces, and a long and narrow pool framed by the nature.

Nestled into the dunes overlooking the Pacific, th Nestled into the dunes overlooking the Pacific, the house is bordered by large Monterey Cypress which frame the spectacular view. To elevate the home’s connection to the water’s edge, the glass sliders angle towards the surfline. This simple re-orientation of the house establishes a frontal relationship to the breaking waves and brings the living spaces in sync with the rhythms of the surf.

Reclaimed old growth Douglas fir boards frame the Reclaimed old growth Douglas fir boards frame the view to the forest from the primary bedroom at  #SentinelRidge.  Perched high above Napa Valley, the home is a wilderness destination. Stretched across a ridge that skirts the tree line, each of the spaces of the house has its own private view of the natural world.
